So here is the sixth installment of my V-Log.  I am pretty stoked on this new format…  have I said that before?  Well I don’t sleep much and dementia runs in my family so…

Anyways, I am home now and reflecting with smiles and a pretty stoked heart on my time in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas.  This was without a doubt one of the best tours I have ever been on, and I have been on a lot.

The audiences were consistently stellar; I was looked after so well by MPI, and I met a ton of amazing people throughout my journeys… many of these friends working at the hotel Inn at the Forks where I was staying.

This V-Log could have been longer but the day that it was recorded was so hectic and my former videographer / photographer Adam from MPI was back in the office.  Ward from MPI shot great footy in the first talk but after that things got pretty knarly, and I was just rushed in and out of the schools.  I am happy, however, with how this V-Log turned out.  I chose Rancid because I kept meeting people Thursday who loved Rancid!

I will try and put together the final V-Log from Winnipeg over the next couple of days.  I am currently chilling at home waiting for my baggage to be couriered since it never made it Vancouver with me last night.

I will explain more in the final V-Log.

For now please enjoy Part VI

All I have to say is I am going to be hurting tomorrow after going to bed at 2:30am and waking up at 6:30am…

I’ll let the V-Log do the talking because I need to do some sleeping…

Alright…

I think I just might have this V-Log thing down now.  It actually takes me probably less time to edit and publish a video than it does to write a blog.  I am feeling the new style, but for those of you who enjoy reading the novels I used to write I will be sure to write the odd blog when I feel so inclined.

For now, please enjoy my second ever V-Log and the beginning to a whole new chapter in getting my story out to the masses.

Once again, please comment and let me know what you think…

V-Log II (Friends for Life Speaker Series and Weekend Fun)

Thanks,

First V-log

So I figure now that I have the new cam I’ll do a quick Vlog about today instead of writing a blog.

Normally my road videos I make are epic and too long to get through… Much like the blogs I used to write.

So I’m going to try something new and maybe just post mini-video blogs daily…

This is the first… Friends For Life Speaker Series (Feb 17th, 2011)

Enjoy!

Five for Five

Posted February 16, 2011

Today was yet another great day in Winnipeg!

I started my morning just before 6am; met Adam at 7am and was at Morris School around 8am.  I was having a hard time feeling awake this morning.  My busy day yesterday and late night had caught up to me.  I can’t remember the last time I felt so tired before a presentation, but the students at Morris sure woke me up fast with their energy.

I was really happy with my first presentation and then again with my second.  But my best memory from Morris was the response from the students.  I was surrounded by enthusiastic students who let me know my morning presentations had surely made an impact.  Thanks to all of you who chilled with me at your school and everyone who has written me or posted messages for me tonight!!  Wassup to my skate buds, the birthday girl, my BMX brah, all the leadership students and every other rad person I met at Morris…  This list could go on and on…

My second presentation was at Ness Middle School in Winnipeg.  I had good vibes from the moment I rolled into the school.  The principal was a great guy and even recognized my Rancid sticker on my wheelchair and talked some punk rock with me: Epitaph Records, Bad Religion and washing dishes to NOFX.  Principals sure are cooler than I recall from my days in school!

The students were so good.  They were almost too good.  They were so polite and attentive I wasn’t sure if they were really feeling my story.  But I was shown differently by the tears and applause concluding my talk; followed by a question period that would still likely be going on right now if I hadn’t shut it down; followed by the best banner signing (MPI and TADD have a banner for each school to sign); followed by many conversations with a ton of cool students (Metal Cody wassup!! and everyone else).  This was a excellent way to close out an already awesome day!!

I capped the day off with yet another delicious meal at the Current Restaurant in my hotel…  Duck filled perogis and brick weighted and cooked chicken…  Fancy, Fancy!  I also made a trip to Future Shop and bought myself a new Sony Bloggie Touch Camera since my old one was lost in the Social Distortion mosh pit last Saturday.

Thanks to everyone from today!  This trip has been so awesome.  I am still lovin’ life in Winnipeg thanks to you all!

Less Rock, More Talk

So today was about as rad as a day on the road can get!

I am in Winnipeg, Manitoba as part of the Friends for Life Speaker Series organized and sponsored by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI). I must say Winnipeg is a pretty kickass city! And it’s not all that cold outside either.

From the time my plane landed, I have had some seriously good vibes. I also felt welcomed and confident that I was in good hands by chauffer de jour (though I am driving) so I guess passenger-roadie-de-jour. Ryan from MPI was waiting for me at the aiport to ensure I landed well and got my rental car - which I did and FINALLYwith no hand control screw up this time. He also led me to my hotel, a beauty place in the Forks area of Winnipeg, and got my bags to my room. How’s that for hospitality? Prairie people… I tell ya it’s not a myth. They truly are a fine breed of people.

I slept well, ate breaky in my room and listened to Winnipeg’s own punk band Propagandhi this morning to get me jacked for the day ahead. My first presentation this morning and first presentation ever in Manitoba was at Shaftesbury High School.

Now, I have been travelling around Canada, and the USA more recently, for years. It is  rare that I  find myself feeling a little nervous, but today there I was thinking ‘I hope these fine young people are down with me and what I’m about to say.’

Well, it didn’t take long to get the couple hundred or so students at Shaftesbury’s attention. They seemed totally game to hear me out from the get go. I was glad they laughed at my jokes too. I felt good vibes from start to finish at Shaftesbury- my finale arriving a couple minutes after the bell with nobody moving or seeming to mind. I left Shaftsbury stoked, smiling and happy with the start of the tour.

With Ryan in shotgun, our next stop was Subway for a quick bite. As I waited in the knarly lunch line awaiting a little piece of the  reason why Jared’s trunks shrunk I was well aware of the time… RIP Jared apparently. I had a radio interview fast approaching. By the time I sat down (insert wheelchair joke here) I had 2minutes to devour my sub. I power chomped lunch, raced out the door and made the call to the radio station. The radio interview went pretty decent, and no sooner did I hang up than we were off again to another school and a larger media event.

Next stop: Oak Park High… Home of the Raiders and a massive media launch promoting the Friends for Life Campaign. I met many of the fine people from MPI who have made it possible for me to be here in Winnipeg, and faced an awesome media blitz. It was pretty intense having more cameras than I’ve ever had pointing at me at one time before. I felt like JB’s bro Rollie Bieber with all that attention. The media launch went well, but really it was just the warm up before the real reason I was at Oak Park.

I wrapped one final TV interview with CTV (watch here) before bolting for the washroom ala bladder relief before starting my talk. It was a packed room with a vibe more formal than that of my average talk. I did my best to ignore all the cameras and focus on the audience. With so many VIP people in attendance and the multiple news cameras rolling the pressure was on. But all I could do was try and stick to my game and deliver to the students.  But it was more the audiences’ focus on me that really got me going. They really seemed to take to our story from the start. I could see and feel the connections being made with relation to the story I was sharing.

As the presentation progressed I knew I was running short on time. I tried to condense and talk fast without missing any important info all-the-while hoping I would have time to play my video at the end.  The bell was about to ring and I figure I’d throw it out there to the crowd… I asked the students if they wanted to see my video. The general consensus was positive.

So I gave the go ahead to my man on the lights and the AV brah running my laptop and ahead went the vid. It was pretty remarkable that when the final bell rang only a small group of students left the room. Many of these students made a detour in my direction to thank me, as they headed on their way for the bus they had to catch or elsewhere. I’d love to think that most of those who left had a bus to catch, but I can’t say for sure. What I can say for sure was hundreds of students staying five minutes after the final school bell made my day!  I cannot and will not let such respect go unrecognized. I hope many of those who stuck it out to see the end of my talk today read these words THANK YOU!!! … and that goes for Shaftesbury too…  THANK YOU!!!

I left Oak Park absolutely stoked! And as an added bonus I learned from some rad students at the school that Streetlight Manifesto, one of my fav ska bands, is playing Winnipeg this weekend.

Back at my hotel my smile had not faded. I was right pumped with the way my first day in Winnipeg went. I did one more radio interview, preceded by a lengthy pre-interview and then set off for a quiet dinner with my diehard road team… Me, myself and I…

The majority of these words you are reading were written between bites of scallops, delicious delicacy breads & spreads and an entre of elk and succulent starches and greens. I figured after such an amazing day, I should treat myself. So I did. I also bought a pair of Streetlight Manifesto tickets, so the show is a go!!

Before I shut this down, I just want to say many thanks to everyone I met today from MPI, TADD, Shaftesbury and Oak Park. I haven’t written a blog like this in months… These words were fully inspired by my appreciation of all of you.

Loving Winnipeg and looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures…

Saskatchewan Update

Posted February 3, 2011

Well hello there…

This is surprisingly my first blog of 2011.  So I guess I should start off with Happy New Year.

I am in Lloydminster, Alberta right now chilling in bed. I’m 4 days into a pretty intense Saskatchewan tour that has me doing 19 presentations in 9 days!! I am 8 presentations in now.

So far I have spoke at St. Walburg, Goodsoil, Loon Lake, Pierceland, Neilburg, Onion Lake, Turtleford and Edam. It seems with each presentation I am finding my speaking game, as I took a pretty good hiatus over the Holidays… A much needed break I should add. I had a super busy fall - busiest ever in fact!

Each audience I have had during this trip has been awesome. As with any trip from the past to the Land of Living Skies, my favourite part of Saskatchewan is the people. And as always I have been meeting some really genuinely awesome people in my travels…  More than I could ever list.  But you know who you are!  You reading this are probably one of these people ~: )

SGI & Sasktel have generously sponsored my tour and a great lady named Bonnie Midgley from Paradise Hill, SK organized 13 of my 19 talks!!! This support is so appreciated!

Well I am going to wrap this puppy up. For this tour I am going to put together a video rather than writing an epic ten page blog.

Off to edit said video I go.

Thanks for reading and thanks to Mother Nature for today’s temperature hovering around the 0C mark, as opposed to the extremity freezing  -30C / -40C temps that were the first three days I was here.

Much respect to all of the students who have wrote me, shaken my hand or just approached me to chat in these past few days. And thanks to Rita from Goodsoil / Pierceland for the amazingly delicious muffins!

Ok, I am really going now.

Thanks for reading!
